Caudex repens, crassitie pennoe anserinoe, setis vel paleis subulatis, scariosis, nitidis, fuscis, dense obtectus, hic
illic radicosus, fibris ferrugineo-tomentosis.
Frons spithamoea fere pedalis, erecta, coriaceo-merabranacea, lineari-lanceolata, paululum falcata, intcgeixima,
glabra, basi longe attenuata, superne acuminata, obscure costata, enervosa, 4—5 lineas lata.
Sori solitarii, marginales, continui in partem superiorem frondis, sed non ad apicem attingentes, 4—5 uncias
longi.
Involuci-um duplex, exterius crassiusculum.
Capsidæ brevi-pedicellatoe, sphoericæ, annulo fere completo cinctæ. Inter has capsulas sunt pili plurimi articolati,
articulo ultimo claviformi truneato.
Semina oblongo-reniformia, pellucida, fere albida.

favoured with original specimens o f that author by Professor Mcrtens o f Bremen, and which are
here figured. B u t it must be confessed, that the distinguishing marks o f this and other Vittaria:
arc but imperfectly defined: and even with regard to th e present, it seems scarcely if at all different,
on the one hand, from what we have received from botanists o f h igh authority as V . e lo n g a ta ; and
on the other, from V . ensifolia o f Swartz.
