On the first aspect o f this plant, it certainly bears a very considerable resemblance to the Cænop
te r is rh izo p k jlla , figured at T a b . 1 9 3 o f th is w o rk ; and it is n o t easy in words to describe the
essential differences. W h en th ey are minutely compared, however, it will be found that our present
plant is o f a much more delicate and membranaceous texture ; that the .p innules are much broader
and more cuncate ; and that the fructifications arc more distant from the margin, and hence
p o sse ssin g less o f that character which has been considered to constitute the genus Cænopteris o f
Bergiiis, D a ræ a o f Jussieu.
