P l a n t growing in ra th e r sm a ll and dense patches, among o the r Ju n g en n an n iæ and Mosses.
Root consisting o f a n um be r o f m in u te fibrous radicles, principally issuing from th e
lower p a r t o f th e plant.
Stems short, generally n o t much exceeding h a lf a n inch in len g th , e re c t o r ascendent,
flexuose, o f a pale reddish-browm color, simple, o r once or twice dichotomous; b u t
p roduc ing also young la te ra l shoots, sometimes singly, sometimes two o r th re e to g e th e r,
from n e a r th e extrem ity (f. 3 ).
Leaves (f. f. 5. 6) bifarious, distichous, horizo n ta l, ra th e r closely placed, imbricated,
divided in to two unequa l, conduplicate, appressed, and ve rtic a l lobes, o f which the
inferior is m uch th e la i-g e st, and is h a lf a line long, ovate, acute , recurved, especially
in those th a t approach th e apex o f th e stem ( f .3 ) , and sharply s e ria ted, though the
se rra tu re s are irreg u la r in size an d distance, and do n o t extend more th an half way
down th e ma rgins from th e p o in t: th e superior lobe is n o t so large by two-thii-ds
as th e inferior-, i t is o f a rotundo-ova te figure, acute , its exte rior surface convex,
its apex sharply, b u t unequally, serrated. T h e color o f th e leaves is a pale and b rig h t
yellow gre en, sometimes inc lining to brown, th e te rm m a l ones often tipped with a
fine purplish tin g e . T h e texture is ra th e r firm and rigid. T h e cellules roundish,
m inute .
In th e perigonial leaves, w hich I have only h ith e ito observed to be s itua ted about
th e middle o f th e stem, tlie lobes are almost equal in size, and n ot a t all serrated.
T hese are closely imbricated,
T h e perichætial leaves resemble th e cauline ones in evciy th in g b u t in having the
inferior lobes more I'ecmvcd, and th e superior about h a lf th e ir size.
