T h e s trongly d en ta to-c ilia ted m a rg in s o f th e leaves in J . nemorosa will readily seive to
distinguish i t from its associates, and especially from J . undulata an d J. umbrosa, to which, in
g ene ra l h ab it and mode o f gi-owth, i t heara considerable affinity. Micheli appears to be the
e a rlie st w rite r who lias noticed this species, and has twice represented i t in t. 8, o f his Genera
Plantarum. T h is a cute observer has also rema rked tlic Gemmee, which he mistook for seeds,
b u t his figure o f them is by no means a c cura te . Hedwig has admirably illu stra ted th is pa rt,
th o u g h he has likewise fallen in to a n e rro r in considering i t to be th e male flower, from whicli
i t differs essentially in form, s tru c tu re , and s itua tion. Dillenius’, t. 7 1 , f. 18, is very cha ra c te ristic
o f th e p lan t, infinitely more so th a n his f. 21, o f th e same p la te ; which, however, I have
a scertained, by a n examina tion of the o rigina l specimens, to be a v a rie ty possessing a purplish
tin g e . Tab. 71- f- 19, also belongs to th e same species.
Dr. Smith and W ith e rin g have confounded th e pui-ple v a rie ty o f tliis species w ith J . purpurea,
o f W e is CMnium Jungermannia, L in n ,) , w ith wliich i t corresponds in color and place o f growth,
th o u g h in ei-ery o the r re spe c t i t is widely different. T h e th re e figures above quoted, in
English Botany, unquestionably all belong to th e same p lan t.
