In the female p lants, on th e contrary, th e la rge st leaves are those whiel, approach the
calyx (f. 4 ). They are every where ra th e r closely and bifariously placed, sliglitly
imbricating each othe r, a lternate, horizontally pa tent with regard to the stem, o r, not
unfrequently, e rect and secund, as is repre sented a t th e b«ie o f fig. 4 : the ir form is round
o r su b o rb ic u la r, plane o r very slightly concave, a t the margins entire, sometimes a little
waved, and a t th e extrem ity a smaU p o rtio n is generally recurved, as is more drstmclly
