Stems nearly e rect, filiform, flexuose, from h a lf an inch to an inch and a h a lf in length,
simple, o r only once or twice dichotomous, with lo n g undivided branches, upon which
a short la te ra l innovation is occasionally hei'c and there produced: they are of a close
texture, o f a brownish color, rigid and b rittle when ilry.
Leaves (f. f. S. 4) about one -fourth o f a line long, ra th e r distantly placed, more apart a t
th e base o f th e p lan t, a t th e e x tm n ity collecteti into a little cluste r, bifarious, liorizotital,
subquadrate, having th e sides inclining to conduplicate, b ut n o t strictly so, and so appressed
in th e ir lower pa rt to th e stem , th a t i t is almost entirely concealed; the
up p e r ones are divided into two equal, ra th e r acute lobes ; b u t, in proportion as they
recede from th e apex, they become more uiiecjual and acute, and the lower ones o f
all (f. 4 ), be a r no small resemblance to th e leaves o f th a t family to which J . nemorosa
and its congeners be long; he re and there a le a f may be found having three lobes o r
