H a . Growing, intermixed w ith J . nmll.jSd«, by the side of a ditch, near th e private
road from Cadnam to Poultons, in th e New Forest. Mr. L y eH .-S in c e found by the same
gentleman, in August, 1813, in th e moss o f Kinnordy, Kerriemuir, S c o tla n d .- I t produces
fructification, both male and female, in th e winter and spring months.

R o o tsf from a descending m a in branch (if I may so express m y se lf), which appears to be
altoge the r a co ntinua tion o f th e stem, and nearly equals i t in thickness, anse several
la rg e subearnose fibres, which shoot o u t in a horizontal direction : th ey vary much in
iength, generally exceeding a qua rte r o f a n inch, aud a re eithe r simple o r b l a n c h e /
th e ir color is a d i r t , white, and th e cellular structure is th e same as th a t exhibited by
» 7 trying filiform, b u t n o t remarkably slender, for th e most p a r t simple, though a divided stem is
now and th en observable, and a y oung shoot or innovation oecasionall, arises from v arious

Th e Uaoes in th e ta lle r individuals a re ra the r distantly placed, more crowded in th e /h o r lc r
on e s: all of th em are pa tent o r e re c to-pa tent, sometimes a little recurved. Phey are
inserted w ith o u t orde r on e v e r , side o t th e stem, aud vary in regard lo size m all parts of

are eithe r ovate or oblongo-ovate, or, occasionally, ligula te , plane, cu t a t th e ma rgin,
th o u g h not deeply, ye . in a manne r so irregular, tha t they th e , will be more earily
