T h is P l a n t grows in small and loosely-entangled patches, o f a pale yelloAvish gre en hue,
tlirowing o u t liere an d th e re , from th e whole len g th o f its un d e r surface.
Roots, which consist o f m in u te , Avliitisli, simple, and pellucid fibres.
Surculi filiform, flexuose, pro cum b en t, v an-ing from h a lf a n inch to a n inch, o r even
to an inch a n d h a lf in l e n g th ; in c e ita in s itua tions, a b o u t th e tw e n tie th p a r t o f a
line in d iameter, semi-pellucid, cellulose, o f a texture equaUy delicate witli th a t o f th e
leai-es : th e jirima ry ramification, as in th e congeners o f this species f J . hicuspidata,
curvifolia, an d byssacea), is disposed in a somewhat s te lla ted form, th e branches being
o fte n aga in simply divided by su b p a ten t ram u li, o r, as may be seen in f 3, producing
small innoA'ations.

cleft a t th e extrem ity by a n orbicular n otch in a very u n usua l m an n e r, so th a t th e
s egments a re c o n n iv e n t; whence th e name. The substance o f th e le a f appears
peculiarly succulent and subcamo.sc, th e cellules la rg e , in-egularly subquadra te , theii-
sui-faces slightly prom in en t. T h e color is a very pale }ellowish green.
