Root consisting o f a few, very small, simple fibres, descending, a t d is tan t inte rva ls, from
th e lower side o f th e plant.
SteiHS procumbent, fiexuose, from tivo to th re e and even four inches long, b e se t with
many distichous, nearly horizontal, sc a tte red ramuli, which vary from h a lf an inch to
two inches in len g th , lo n g and sh o rt being intermixed w ith o u t o rd e r; th e smaller ones
simple, th e la rg e r again p in na ted by a few sh o rt and simjile shoots, equally irreg u la r in
p o in t o f size, n um b e r, and position : th e whole o f th e branches are singularly a tten u a ted
a t th e ir o rigin, b u t th en line a r, and b lu n t a t th e ir p o in ts ; th e ir texture is f irm ; the ir
color a d irty brown.
Leaves (f. f. 3 . 4) in general a b o u t ha lf or thre e -q u a rte rs o f a line long, those a t th e base and
extrem ity o f th e stems and branches smallest; it n o t very unfrequently happens th a t th e
even o utline o f th e shoots, which is in g ene ra l remarkable, is here and th e re inte rru p ted
