Stems from two to th re e inches in len g th , filiform, slender, undulated, o f a red or reddish-
b row n color, and firm tex tu re , e rect, simple, o r once o r twice in-egulady dichotomous.
T h e Leaves ( f .f . 4. 7. 8) a re bifarious, e rect, appressed, and so closely imbricated as to
conceal th e stem on eveiy side. They are a b o u t a q u a rte r o f a line in len g th , o f a
qu adra te figure, b u t ra th e r broader th a n long, semiamplexicaul, divided from the
extrem ity to w ith in one-fifth o f th e base in « (in fi to w ithin o ne -third o f th a t
distance) in to four equal, lanceolate, e re c t segments, which are keeled on th e ir in n e r
surface, and furrowed on th e o u te r ; tlie ir ma rgins a re recurved, those o f « here and
th e re beset with unequa l, b u t stro n g te e th , generally poin tin g dowmvards, while in fi,
these margins are iiuite entire , th o u g h , in th e lower angles o f th e leaves, in both the
