Roots a few minute, whitish, simple, fibres, proceeding from n e a r th e base o f th e stem.
Stems from a q u a rte r of an inch to almost h a lf an inch in len g th , fiUform, slightly flexuose,
a t th e base mostly a little procumbent, in the re s t o f th e p lant erect, undivided, or
sometimes, th o u g h rarely, b e a rin g a simple branch or in u o v a tio n : th e color partakes of
th a t o t th e le av e s ; th e ta tu r e is, in th e uppe r p a r t, ten d e r and ceUulose, below more
com pa c t: somewhat b rittle when dry.
Leaves (f. f. 4 , 5 ,6) m ore or less closely placed in a bifarious manner, p a ten t or horizontal,
tmvards the apex o f th e p lan t frequently secund, about a quarter o f a hne long, deeply
divided in to two u nequa l conduplicate lobes o r s egm en ts, o t w lu .h th e mtenor ui about
twice the size of th e supe rior; b u t both o f th e s am e figure , narrowly ovate, w .th a cute
ap ic e s, the ir ma rgins are entire , or only slightly, and principally in the u p p e r leaves.
Irregularly toothed. T h e ir gencrffi color is a yellow-green approaching to olive m
shady situa tions o f a more uniform g r e e n ; th e lower leaves mostly incline to a dirty
brown. T h e cellules are small, roundish, o f an equal s u e throirghout.
