watched its progress so unremittingly, th a t I had a t len g th th e satisfaction o f receiving from him
specimens in th e state represented nt tab. 83. f. f. 3 . 4. 7. 1 2 ; and had soon after, from Ambleside,
the still g re a te r pleasure o f having forwarded to me, by th e same friend, an individual with the
capsule burst from the frond. With equal ardor Dr. Taylor commenced his researches in the
neighborhood o f Dublin, where he had the good fortune to find capsules fully ripe , and discharging
th e ir seed, on the mountains a t Lough Bray, on th e 31st o f M arch, 1814. These he communicated
to me, with the rema rk, tha t he believes th e capsules to be o f very short duration j “ for th a t it was
n o t till a fte r repeated visits to th e same spot, and a most laborious search each tim e upon his
hands and knees, th a t he was a t len g th able to discover them. The w e a the r was remarkably warm,
succeeding a shower o f ra in .”
I have myself seen th e p lant in th e same h abita t, and likewise in various parts o f E ngland
and Scotland, though it is chiefly confined to hilly or mounta inous districts. In Switzerland it is
very ab u n d an t; yet it was only on th e Grimsel, in th e au tum n o f 1814, th a t I ever saw the capsules
exserted upon growing plants.
