Roots (as in J . compressa) scarcely an y ; the few th a t do ex ist are confined to the lower
p a rt o f th e stem.
Stems erect, filiform, fiexuose, about ha lf an inch long, extremely slender, simple, or beset
with one or two innovations, u nc e rta in as to th e ir place and length, b u t always more
slender th an th e main stem, and undivided. The sub.slance is tender and flaccid, composed
o f large, conspicuous, oblong cellules; the color a pale green, approaching in some
instances to olive.
Leaves (f. 3) distantly and alternately placed, a rising from four sides, o f large dimensions
when compared with the diameter o f the stem, becoming, however, gradually
smaller as they recede fiom th e ajsex ; the smallest are seen upon the innovations ; they
are all pa ten t or c re c to-pa tent, ovate, generally sliglitly carinated, and cleft, for about
one -third o f their length, by an acute sinus, into two equal, ra th e r sharp, b ut altogether
en tire segments. T he ir lexture is peculiarly soft ( if I may be allowed the expression)
and flaccid; the rcrica/arion very large, and formed by oblong ( f - 4).
Perichctlud leaves larger th an the rest, anil, wh a t is remarkable, even more distantly placed
than th e cauline ones, n o t unfrequently leaving th e whole calyx exposed (f. 2 ).
