T h e surculi, which may h e reckoned am ong th e smallest of any o f th e gen u s, a re scarcely
so th ick as th e h um a n h a ir, a n d n o t more th a n two o r th re e lines in len g th , th ro u g h o u t
filiform, somewhat rig id , branched, like J . hicuspidata; in a k in d o f s te lla ted form; the
b ranches often ag a in divided, and pro cum b en t, b u t th e fe rtile ones p o in tin g upwards a t
th e t ip s : th e ir color varies from a n olive -gre en to a d a rk b row n ; th e la tte r is th e most
usu a l appearance.
