P la n t growing in dense tu fts o f small size.
Root la rge , creeping, o f a ligneous texture ami brown color, throwing o u t here and there
small opaque fibres.
Stems e rect, filiform, flexuose, from ha lf an inch to an inch and a ha lf in h e ig h t, and
a b o u t th e thickness o f h orse-hair, simple or rarely divided a t th e base: sometimes,
however, two o r more arise from the cre eping ro o t; they are of a rigid and somewhat
b r ittle texture; below o f a dark brown color, and opaque; above o f an ollve-grecn, and
evidently cellular.
Leaves alternately and ra th e r distantly disposed in a bifarious m an n e r: those a t th e base
smallest, most widely placed, n ot more than a qua rte r o f a line long, ovate and concave,
with entire margins, and either appressed to th e stem o r e r e c to -p a ten t; the re st are
considerably la rg e r, though they frequently again diminish in size as they approach the
extremity, and are o f a roumlisb o r even a subquadrate figure, pa ten t, and sometimes
recurved, as in J . s f iuulosa and J . asplenioides; the ir base is decurrent; th e ir margins
furnished with one. or often two or three large, and, a t the ir base, broad, spiniform teeth;
b u t these are placed in so irregula r a manne r, .and a t snch u n c e ita in distances, tha t it is
n ot possible to fiml two th a t precisely agree in this particular, .k common appearance of
th e lower leaves is given a t / . lOi / 4 is a portion of th e stem, o t which one le a f has two,
and th e other th re e , te e th a t the apex: / . 5 has an acnte tooth a t th e „ tr em ity , and
another lateral one; / . 6 represents two leaves, the one having its margins entire, the
othe r furnished with an obtuse, lateral tooth, which is not o f common oecnrrene e ; / . 7
has two divaricating te e th a t the apex : / . 8 is cu t into two unequal lobes, (which may
