Dr. Taylor finds this species in Ire lan d with calyces, o f which the perichælial leaves
vary somewhat fi'oin o u r figure, tab. v m . ; and I have consequently figured them in the
supplementary p late, where it will be seen th a t they a re divided in to three o r four large
and broad, unequal, slightly toothed segments. D r. Mohr has the subjoined observation in
his FI. Crypt. Germ., immediately following his division o f Hypnum, “ foliis diversimodc
vergentibus, b in e n iis v, subenervils.” p. 349. “ Hujus subdivisionis v ide tur, Ju n g , setacea,
Web. Spie ., ex ipsius herb,, fruc tu vero carens. Folia non gemina, quod au c to r h abe i, sed
laxius disposita, subpatentia, siibulata, enervia omnino visa, integerrima. Jungermannia
nullo modo e st. Vix unqiiam teneriorem sfieciem vidimus.” Weber’s words are certainly
a t variance with this description, and are such as I think no one would hesitate in applying
to our Jungermannia; “ Siirculi su n t tenuissimi, repentes, seniiunciales, unciales, imo
interdum longiores, ex albo virescentes. Folia a lterna, gemina, setacea, brevia, non niai
lente accurate perspicienda.” Web. Spie. p . 156.

From th e description, no less than from the reference to th e figure o f J .ju la c e a , in
English Botany, there is no doubt b ut D r. Wahlenberg has quite mistaken the J . concinnata
o f Lightfoot, calling it J .ju la c e a , and vice versa the tru e J .ju la c e a , J . concinnata; b ut
whv he has arranged o u r p lan t among the stipulated Jun g e rm an n iæ I cannot conceive.
Indeed, in order to do this, he has been under the necessity of fo rm in g a division, which
he defines, “ Stipulis magnitudine e t figurâ ferb foliorum this contains, besides our '
J .ju la c e a , J . setiformis and J . trichophylla; on none o f which have I ever seen any thing
which can be looked upon as stipules. Even in th e arctic regions, this species is confined
to the h ighe st mountains. H ab ita t,” says Wahlenberg, “ in te rrà nu d à limosà irriga ta
