Stems in a b a rren s ta te usually procumbent, in fe rtile specimens e rect, from h a lf an inch
to an inch and a h a lf in len g th , of an equal thickness th ro u g h o u t, o f a dirty brown
color, rig id and b rittle when dry, irregula rly divided, and generally more or le,ss beset
w ith branches, which a re equally u n c e ita in in th e ir numbe r, disposition, and length,
and are subpa tent.
Leaves closely imbric a ted an d appressed, suiTounding th e stem on four sides (f. 5) and
entirely concealing it, ei-ect, nearly ovate, flat, o r b u t very slightly concave, acutely
cleft to ab o u t thre e -fo u rth s o f fheii- length into two equal segments, which a re stra ig h t,
ovato-lanceolate and a cuminated, th e ir ma rgins very obscurely serrated ; th e te rm in a l
leaves, which usually grow in clusters, differ from th e re st in having th e segments
more lanceolate and a cu te , and in being more evidently, tliough very unequally, seirated.
