have been m e t with only by Miss Hutchins and D r. Taylor in Ire land d uring the early
sp rin g months, and by Mr. L y e ll in the New Forest, in Ju ly , and again on the ninth o f

P l a n t g rowing in very densely-matted patches o f considerable extent, conspicuous from th e ir deep
green or almost black color.
Root consisting of numerous, minute, short, whitish and simple fibres, thrown o u t liere and
th e re from th e g re a te r p a rt o f the under side o f the plant.
Stems from a qua rte r to h a lf an inch, or ra the r more, in length, procumbent, slender,
filiform, flexuose, simple, or, as is frequently th e case, bearing two or thre e simjile
scattered ramuli, which are eithe r, like th e pa rent stem, procumbent (f. 4 ) , or erect (f. 5)-,
when th e p lan t grows am o n g gra ss or moss; T h e color varies from a pale green to an
olii'e brown. T h e texture is ra th e r firm, composed o f oblong cellules. Innovations are now
and then found a rising from various parts o f th e stem, whicli much resemble the
smaller branches.
