Stems procumbent, from three to five, and even six inches, in len g th , considerably stouter
in th e la rg e r plants than horse-hair, flexuose, filiform, once or twice dichotomous, beset
th ro u g h o u t the ir w hole length w ith r a th e r d istantly-placed, pa ten t o r recurved, acuminated
pinnæ, which vary from an inch to an inch and a h a lf, or more, in length, and are e ithe r
simple, or again furnished with shorter pinnulæ. T h e color is a dirty brown; the texture
compact, when dry very brittle.
Leaves (f. f. 4. 5) ra lh c r closely placed, from a q u a rte r lo h a lf a line in length : in th e
ex trem e ramuli the la rg e st are a t th e ap e s , in th e re s t they become gradually smaller
towards th e apices; every where they are imbricated over th e uppe r surface of th e stem
and branches, and have a bifarious dire c tion; the ir form is round or subquadrate, and
composed o f two very unequal conduplicate lobes, o f which the upper one is th e la rge st,
convex above, divided, for about h a lf its len g th , by an acute sinus, into two, ovate
segments, which are beset a t their margins with variously-sized, b u t generally large,
spiniform te e th : th e inferior lobe is exceedingly minute and oblong, with its margin
ne a rly entire. T h e cellules o f the le a f are o f a roundish form, very distantly placed,
resembling those o f J . Turneri. The color is a purplish brown, paler, and o f a moro
dirty hue in th e lower leaves. _
