Of th e present curious little plant no fructification has a t p re s en t been fo u n d ; nor indeed is it
a t all necessary for the distinguishing o f th e species, th e leaves and stipules affording ab undant characters
by which i t may be known from every o th e r in th e genus. Ne ith e r is it an easy task to
determine to which it is most naturally allied. In th e narrowed base o f th e leaves it has a n affinity
with J . spinulosa : in size, color, and texture , w ith J . byssacea: b u t th e stipules require th a t it
should be arranged in quite a different family, where th e re is none for which i t can be mistaken.
