in Angus-shire, a n d on Ben Lawers and Ben Nevis ; again found in 1 8 0 2 , on Cairn-
g-omm, and in September, 1 8 0 2 , on B en-na -bord and Ben-Mac-Davie, two m o u n ta
ins N o rth o f the Dee.

O f th e roots, I have not been able to find any tra c e s, and, indeed, the lower p a r t of
th e p lants (whence, probably, th e roots originate) are so much matted to g e th e r, and
so b r ittle , th a t it is scarcely possible to sepai-ate an entire individual from the tu f t. .
Stems from one to two or even nearly th re e inches in len g th , and ab o u t th e tlu ck -
ness o f h orse-hair, e re c t, filiform, flexuose, o f a rigid, and, in a dry s ta te , fragile
n a tu re , somewhat ligneous, opaque, exhib itin g no cellular tex tu re , o f a purplish-brown
color, often verging to a black, e ith e r simple, or occasionally in te rrupted by one or
two sc a tte red young shoots, which, except in size, differ in no respect from the
p a ren t stem.
Leaves (f. f. 3. 4. 5) closely imbricated in a bifarious m an n e r over th e posterior surface
o f th e stem , and w ith g re a t reg u la rity th ro u g h o u t its whole len g th , about h a lf a Ime
lo n g , o f an oblongo-ovate figure, very concave, having th e sides not unfrequently
incurved; a t th e hase they are slightly d e c u rre n t; a t tlie apex divided by an acute
sinus, which is o ften concealed by th e involute margin o f th e extremity (see f. 5),
in to two small, and ra th e r obtuse te e th ; with regard to position, they arc nearly
horizontal, slightly falcate, sometimes distichous, (f. f. 3. 4) b ut fur more generally
