Root a few whitish, pellucid fibres, proceeding h e re and th e re fi'oni nearly tiie whole
len g th o f th e u n d e r side o f th e plant.
Stems from h a lf to th re e -q u a rte rs o f a n in ch lo n g , simple, sometimes, th o u g h rarely,
once or twice forked, flexuose, p rocum bent, th e ir apices e re c t only when in a s ta te of
fm c tific a tion, o r when th e shoots a re crowded to g e th e r. T h e ir color is a reddish
brown.
Leaaes, in fertile p lan ts , r a th e r closely imbricated, especially towards th e extrem ity ; in
baiTen ones, generally more distantly placed, always bifarious, horizontal, about ha lf a
line lo n g , o f a roundish figure {f. f. 5. 6) , divided in to two nearly equal, conduplicate,
and, with re g a rd to th e stem, l e rtical lobes, which, however, a re n o t so closely folded
as those o f J . nemorosa and J . tindulata : each o f th em is convex on its o u te r surface
