and ono to each leaf, which is quite a t variance with all we yet k now re sp e c tin g th e stipules of
Ju n g e rm an n iæ . Dr. Smith, to o , has described th e stipules as entire .
J . barbata is abu n d an tly distinguished from every other species of th e gen u s, by th e shape o f
its leaves, its stipule s, and its calyx, when taken in co n junc tion w ith th e othe r parts o f th e p lant. Its
ne a re st affinily is, perhaps, with J . stipulacea and J. Bantriensis mss.j b u t these have only two te e th
o r segments to th e leaves, and th e stipules a re undivided. In rega rd to th e name, I have preferred
th a t o f Schreber, n o twithstanding th a t J . quinquedentata is th e oldest, and has been sanctioned by
th e au thority o f Linnæus. T h is la tte r is extremely inapplicable, and c an only te ^d to mislead the
stu d en t ; for, I believe th a t, except by a c c id en t o r injury, five segments a re never seen to exist
on th e leaves o f this species.
