proportion to th e size o f th e p lan t, exactly spherical, re ticula ted, placed upo n a short, pellucid,
transversely s tria ted footstalk. On pre ssing one o f these w ith a n in s trum e n t, while u n d e r the
microscope, an extremely m in u te pollen, or g ran u la ted substance, was discharged, each pa rtic le
o f w hich was roundish, an g u la r, and s emitranspa rent.

The p re s en t is one o f th e most distin c t o f th e B ritish Ju n g e rm an n iæ with which I am
a cquainted, n o r c an I mention any to which i t bears th e smallest affinity, e ith e r in th e form o f its
leaves, o r in th e s in g u la r man n e r in w hich they embrace each o th e r w ith th e ir in volute margins.
T h e color too is very peculiar, b e ing extremely da rk , so th a t, when seen in tu fts , i t appears
almost black, By immersion m w a te r for a few hours, a deep brownish tin g e is impa rted
to th e liquid.
In th e form o f th e calyx this species approaches J . minuta, b u t th e calyx he re is sh o rte r in
jiroportion to its d iameter, and less p lic a te ; th e leaves o f th e two plants a re very u n lik e , an d so
s trik in g ly a re those o f th e p re s en t species he a rt-shaped (when they a re expanded, as a t f. 6),
and so much do they in th e ir gen e ra l d irection resemble those o f Hypnum cordifolium, th a t I have
th o u g h t th a t th e same specific name would also be applicable to th e Ju n g e rm a n n ia as to
th e Hypnum.
Mr. Dickson was probably th e first person wlio g a th e red this p la n t; since I find it am ong a
num b e r o f u nnamed species th a t he has been so good as to send me, which were collected many
years ago in th e Scotch m o u n ta in s. Mr. Woods has since g a th e red i t in Ire land, and Mr. Lyell
and myself in Scotland.
