CxATHERED on trees in Scotland, by Mr. Dickson, to
whom we are obliged for this specimen. Dillenius had his
from Patagonia. Dr. Scott is supposed to have found the same,
though without fruit, in Ireland.
The stems and branches are much subdivided, leafy throughout,
round, slender and rigid. Leaves of a remarkably dull
and dark green, imbricated every way, broad-ovate, pointed,
perfectly entire, concave, keeled, with a strong rib reaching
to the point. Sheaths pale, closely imbricated, their leaves
ovate, concave, entire, ribbed, with long taper points. Fruit-
stalk hardly an inch long, smooth, dark red. Capsule drooping
or pendulous, ovate at the base, contracted above, dilated
at the mouth, brown, smooth. Lid, according to Dillenius,
slender, awlshaped, curved.
