C o m m o n on moift rocks and the Items of trees, which
it clothes in large flat brown patches, eafily flapped off. The
fronds are clofely imbricated, rather zigzag, fubdivided into
numerous fliort divaricated branches, all clofely covered with
fmall, convex, Aiming, two-ranked, roundifh, entire leaves,
green when young, but foon becoming of a mahogany brown.
Each of thefe bears underneath a fmall auricle of its own
figure, and adjoining to it on the main Item is a fmall cloven
fcale or ftipula, for the knowledge of whofe true form and
nature we are obliged to the Rev. Mr. Francis. The capfules
appear in March on fhort flalks, each from a terminal, inflated,
lobed, granulated {heath. Thefe capfules are of a paler and
redder brown than in moft other fpecies, and from that cir-
cumftance are eafily difcemible on the dark leaves ; but they
do not very often occur,
