A NATIVE of wet fhady fpots, for fpecimens of which
from Tunbridge we are obliged to Mr. 1. F. Forfter. It is
perennial, ripening its fruit during; the winter and early fpring;
but neither the fruit, nor indeed the mofs itlelf,^ is of very
frequent occurrence.
The root confifts of denfe brown fibres. Stems generally
Ample, reddilh, leafy. Leaves obovate, broad, more or lefs
pointed, waved, entire, with a thick cartilaginous edge; their
fubftance thin and pellucid, pale-green, beautifully dotted or
reticulated like the leaves of a Splachnum, with a central rib.
Flowers terminal, dioecious. The male flat, furrounded with
a rofe of larger leaves. Gapfules elliptical, pendulous, on
longilh, red, upright, moftly folitary, ftalks. Lid with a taper
point, not half lo long as the capfule.
Linnaeus has rnoft unwarrantably combined under his
Mnium ferpyllifolium many lpecies as diftinft from each other
as they are all remarkable for elegance. The prefent is known
at once by its broad dotted leaves.
