D i s c o v e r e d by our worthy friend Mr. Templeton near
B e lfa s t; and we gladly accede to th e wishes o f Mr. T u rn e r, in
calling it after th e discoverer, especially as we have sought in
vain for any th in g similar, among several nondescript exotic
Funarice now in our possession.
T h is species differs widely from th e only two of its genus already
described as B ritish , see t. 3 42 an d 1497, in its caulescent
h a b it, an d scarcely oblique fru it, th e form of which is far more
slender th a n in those, with an elongated tap e rin g base. The
proliferous an d occasionally b ran ch ed stem shows th is moss to
be perennial. T h e leaves differ from F . hygrometrica in being
expanded an d nearly f l a t ; from F . Muhlenlergii moreover in
being en tire , a n d , th o u g h po in ted , de stitute of a ha ir-lik e te rm
in a tio n .— T h e fringe is quickly deciduous an d very ten d e r, nor
have we h a d an opportunity o f examining i t critically. The
veil is sufficiently like th e re st o f th e genus, tho u g h n o t, as in
th e original species, quadrangular.
