F r e q u e n t in woods, as well as on old walls that are
copioufly covered with earth. The fructification, produced in
March or April, is not of very frequent occurrence. The, ripe
capfulesgrow on fhort ftalks frotn a lobed and irregularly toothed
fheath, placed, for the mod part laterally, on the younger
branches. They fplit into four broad brown valves. The fronds
lie one over another forming broad loofe patches of a full grafs
green. They are compofed of numerous fubdivided fpreading
branches, thickly clothed with two rows of imbricated heart -
fhaped blunt convex entire leaves, connected beneath by a
triple row of entire ovate auricles. This is readily known
from all our other fpecies by its general form, fize, and colour.
That to which it has mod affinity is the J. complanata.
