N O T uncommon in bogs upon mountains in Scotland,
Wales, and the north of England. We have gathered it on
the Pentland hills near Edinburgh, and have received fine fpe-
cimens from Mr. Griffith, Mr. G. Donn, and Mr. Mackay.
The fynonym of Hudfon ftands on the indifputable authority
of the Rev. H. Davies; but the B. ajlivum of Linnaeus and
Dillenius is a widely different plant.
The ftems form extenfive tufts, and are very flender, Ample,
from 2 to 4 or 5 inches high, leafy above, clothed with dark-
brown fibres below. Leaves fpreading in two ranks, of a
fine green, long, capillary, acute, fheathin'g the ftem with
their dilated bafe, through which runs a ftrorig central rib.
Stalk terminal, upright, very flender, about an inch long,
red and fhining, at "length a little zigzag. Capfule ereft,
fmall, cylindrical, thin, pale fhining brown, with a darker
edge. Fringe of 32 very flender hair-like teeth, approaching
each other in pairs. Lid conical, fhort, reddifh. Veil
flender.
This mofs is perennial, and ripens its capfules in April and
May.
We include under Trichojlomum all moffes that have a fringe
of 32 teeth, whether united at the bafe in pairs or fimply approximated.
Such as have only 16 teeth go much more conveniently
to the genus Grimmia,
