S p e c im e n s of this mofs were communicated to us from
the mountains of Scotland by Mr. John Mackay in the month
of July. It grows in denfe tufts, confifting of longifh, Ample
or divided, leafy Items. The leaves are clofely imbricated,
lanceolate, approaching to an elliptical form (efpecially the
lower ones), entire, tipped with a long briftly point, and having
a not very confpicuous rib. Fruit-ftalks reddifh-yellow, darkeft
at the fummit. Receptacle a little inclined, oblong, or flender
pear-fhaped, brown, bearing a brown cylindrical capfule as in
other fpecies of this curious genus. The lid is flattifh, with a
blunt point; the teeth about 12.
We have afcertained the above fynonyms by a&ual com-
parifon of fpecimens with the Linnaean and Dillenian collections,
fo that the doubts fuggefted by Dr. Withering are removed.
The Phafcum pedunculatum of Linnaeus, and Hudfon’s
firft edition, quoted by Dr. Swartz, is however a different
plant, figured by Dillenius, Hiß. Muß. t. 44• ƒ• 4- an<* ^
Syn. t. 3 . f . 2, and named by Mr. Dickfon, in his fecond faf-
ciculus, Splachnum ovatum, having been miftaken by the
author of the Flora Anglica in his fecond edition for S. vafcu-
lofum of Linnaeus.
