Roots annual, black, elongated, forming dense tufts. Stems
nearly all simple; the fertile ones short, bearing several
crowded, spreading leaves of a dark green, strongly reticulated,
entire, broad-ovate, contracted at each end, and acute
at the summit, furnished with a strong central rib; the other
stems or branches are taller, clothed with more distant, alternate,
paler and blunter leaves. Fruitstalks solitary, terminal,
erect, from half an inch to an inch high, thickish,
firm, of a reddish brown. Receptacle globular, brown, strongly
corrugated when verging towards decay. Capsule about half
as wide as fhe receptacle, and scarcely so long, brown, c)
lindrical.
