T h e root is sup p o sed to be a n n u a l. Stem a t first ve ry short
a n d simple, subsequently elongated above th e o rig in o f the
fru its ta lk , w h ic h is so lita ry , slender, n o t a n in c h h ig h . Leaves
n um ero u s, o v a to-lanc eola te, a cu te , en tire, single-ribbed, a
little revolute, soon tu rn in g b l a c k ; th e u p p e r ones p a le r and
often b ro a d e r. Capsule a little in c lin in g , c y lin d ric a l, brown,
sh in in g , fu rrow e d ; ovate a n d even a t th e base, in w h ic h p a rt it
is in te rn a lly strumous o r solid. L id conic al, short. Fringe
