Q u iL L W O R T is only found under water about the margins
of the moft alpine Rritith lakes, where it.bears its fructification
early m fommer. We have received it from Mr. G.

S r ' T heJ ° 0t IS perenninL tuberous, throwing out many
fong, fimple fibres. Each plant confifts of many fimple, awl-
• laPed, femicylindrical, fmooth fronds or leaves, rather fpread-
ing, and often recurved at the tip. Internally they are longitudinally
divided into four cells, and furnifhed with numerous
tranfverfcfepta. Their bafe is fomewhat dilated, and bordered
with a membrane, and the fruftification is fituated on the jri-
nerlide, the inner row of leaves being male, the outer female
lh e anthera and germen each Hands on an inverfelv heart-
lhaped receptacle. The capfule, when ripe, is nearly as large
as a pea, mimer fed in the bafe of the fronds, thin and membranous,
divided into two cells, and containing numerous

The longer-leaved plants, reprefented m Dillenius-'s fécond
figure, though defenbed by the accurate Dr. Richardfoii as
being remarkably brittle, and different in fome other refnech
lrom the common kind, are now confidered as a mere variety.
