D io icou s ; in v e ry dense cushioned tufts, pa le glaucous green
above, pa le dirty brown below. Stems i -5 in. high, dichotomous, fa s tig
ia te , not radiculose. L e a v e s in 13 rows, soft, pa tent, ra rely subsecund,
entire, from an oval-oblong base, lanceolate, tubulose from the
incurved margins ; lower h a lf w ith a v ery narrow lamina o f slender
prosenchymatous c e lls. P e richæ tial b ra c ts sheathing, lanceolate-subula
te ; seta e longated, rufous, twisted to the r ight when dry. Ca lyp tra
subinflated, rostrate. Capsule exannulate, gibbous-ovate or oblong,
g los sy castaneous, when old blackish, cernuous, strumose, 8-striate,
furrowed when d r y ; peristome deep purple, o f 16 lanceolate teeth, cleft
below the middle into two unequal legs ; lid conic, ros trate, longer than
capsule ; spores ferruginous, smooth.
Male plants in distinct tufts, more slender, with terminal stellate
inflorescence; perigonial b ra c ts 6, ovate, concave, antheridia 10-12
oblong. ’
