fuscescent. L e a v e s e recto-patent, when dry imbricated and con torted,
small linear -ligulate, ra ther obtuse, the wings revolute, nerve thick,
excurrent in a short mucro ; cells at base rectangular, above roundish-
quadrate, in cra ssa te, papillose. Pe rich. b ra c ts elongated, sh e a th in g ;
seta red below, straw-coloured above, caps ellip tic , regular, rufo-
ferruginous, ca lyp tra rather large, rea ching middle o f caps., annulus
simple, lid conico-subulate,' teeth from a b roader basal membrane, very
slender, purple, twice twisted. Male as in B . Hornschuchii.
H a b .— Limestone walls and the plaster of brick walls ; not uncommon.
Fr. 4. Lindberg states that this species is not found in Scandinavia, but
another closely allied occurs in Sweden, which he names B . obtusula, more
robust, the leaves broader, with a thicker nerve and shorter apiculus.
Sect. 4. L E P T O P O G O N (Mitt.). Plants dwarf. Leaves yellowish
green, short, rather obtuse ; perich. bracts diverse, exserted, convolute.
Caps, on a long seta ; peristome very long, contorted.
