high, pale glaucous green above, dirty white or fuscescent below, usually
encrusted with ca lcareou s deposit. L e a v e s la x rigid fragile, nearly
smooth, e recto-patent, lanceolate-subula te, the base dilated, with the
margin toothed, th e cells la x pellucid, e longated, above irregularly
quadrate ; nerve stout, o ccupyin g nearly all apex. Caps, on a shortish
purple seta, chesnut brown, e re c t, ovate or oval, pachydermous, annulus
very narrow, lid obliquely subulate, teeth i6 , deep orange, fla t, slightly
papillose, oblique, lineal-lanc. remotely a r ticu la te , entire or 2— 3 fid.
Male plants more slender, infl. terminal, outer b ra c ts ovali-lanceo-
la te, inner a cuminate, the nerve vanishing.
H ab.— Dripping calcareous rocks or occasionally on sandstone ; not uncommon
but unfrequent in fruit. Fr. 5 —7.
Very variable iu height and density, but easily recognised by the
dentate basal margin of the leaf. Lindberg determined the Hyssopus Salonwnis
H assblquist to be a variety of tliis with recurved leaves.

apex incurved or cu cu llate , mucronate with the excurrent nerve, the

D io ico u s ; densely cæspitose, fa stigia te, bright green. Comal
lea ves patulous, when dry with involute wings, incurved cirrhate, lineal,
margin erect, subundulate, cucullato-incurved at apex, concave, very
minutely papillose, upper ce lls small, indistinct, basa l narrowly
rectangular, nerve terete shortly excurrent in a mucro. Pe rich. bra cts
2— 3 semivaginant, with an erect lanc. a cute a p e x ; seta red below,
yellowish above, caps, erect, ovate or ellip tic , irregularly sulcate when
dry and empty, lid long-beaked, red at margin, teeth in two unequal
legs, more or less perfec t, finely papillose.
Male plants like the female or nearly simple, b ra c ts ovate
acuminate.
H ab.— R ocks, walls and banks in calcareous districts, particularly near the
sea ; not common. Fr. 5— 6.
