quinquefarious, ob ov ate-spathulate, a cute , not a cumin ate, nerve e x cu r rent
in a longish point, margin sligh tly recurved ; upper c e lls quadrato-
he.xag. ra the r obscure, each with several minute con ica l papillæ, low e r
hexagono-rectang. smooth, pellucid. S e ta rather short, reddish yellow,
caps, oval or turbinate when empty, widest about the middle, reddish
brown ; cal. with sca tte red obtuse papillæ on the upper h a lf ; lid p a le r ,
conic with a short oblique obtuse beak.

This much resembles P . truncatula, but has leaves more obscure and
papillose, as is also the calyptra. P. viridifolia and crinita are distinguished
by octofarious leaves and a smooth cal. though in other respects coming very
near to it.

patent, obtuse or sligh tly a cute , margin recurved a t the middle, nerve
excurrent in a short point ; upper ce lls hexagonal, ob s cu re w ith
chlorophyl, papillose, lower oblong, hyaline, smooth. Cap s, on a short
y e llow seta, oblong, n arrower than in P . asperula, rufous brown ; ca l.
smooth, lid rostrate.

The deep green colour and firm texture of this plant are remarkable,
and the leaves are appressed and twisted when dry.

Paroicous ; cæspitose, simple, pale glaucous green. Le a v e s o c to farious,
crowded, a c c re scen t upward, erecto-patent, when dry subimbrica
ted, lower obovate-oblong, upper broadly oblongo-spathulate with a
rounded apex, cuspidate with the longly excurrent nerve, plano-convex
with the margin recurved ; cells la x and rectangular at base, above
opake, small quadrate, chlorophyllose, strongly verruculose, the two
marginal rows larger and more transparent. Ca l. fuscescent and
scabrous a b o v e ; caps, with a , distinct neck, oblongo-elliptic, narrower
a t mouth, g los sy castaneous, on an orange seta, twisted to the right
when d ry ; lid from a convex-conic base, obliquely rostrate, ann. rather
broad, o f i series o f cells ; a rudimentary peristome sometimes present
as an irregular papillose membrane. Male inflor. free in the a.xils of the
comal le a v e s .

Best distinguished by its elongated capsule, and the minute opake
areolation of the upper part of leaf ; the ripe capsule becomes rugose when
dry. The plant from Marazion bridge has longer hair-points, and a tapering
apex, composed of narrow incrassate rhomboidal cells.
