Dioicous ; in broad lax tufts, dull y ellow green above, fuscescent
below, w ith few radicles. L e a v e s erecto-patent, when d ry appressed
and somewhat tw isted, narrowly ovato- and ob longo-lanceolate, more
or less obtuse, mucronate with the th ick yellowish excurrent nerve,
margin revolute in the lower half, carinate at apex ; cells at base small
re c tangular pellucid, above quadrate, opake, densely papillose. Perich.
bra cts elon gate, subvaginant, inner narrower, hyaline to apex, nerve
excurrent ; caps, on a purple se ta, rufo-fuscous, leptodermous,
e lon g a te-e llip tic or subcylindric, regular or sligh tly incurved, lid conico-
subulate, ann. none, peristome deep red, 2— 3 twisted. Male plant
more slender, infl. terminal gemmaceous, b ra c ts broadly ovato-
lan ceo late .
