Tortula intermedia L in d b . M u s c . s c a n d . 21 (187g).

This does not differ from P. truncatula in the form of the capsule only,
but we have in addition the presence of an annulus, and papillose leaves with
revolute margins. Mitten regards it as a gymnostomous form of P . lanceolata,
but the areolation is laxer than in that species.
6. POTTIA I IT TO EAIIS Mitten.
A u to ic o u s ; resembling P . intermedia, but with longer leaves ; upper
cells smaller, quite smooth, the walls much more incrassate.

A p lant o f firmer tex tu re than P . intermedia and difficult to define ; the
areolation o f the ap ica l p art o f th e le a f affords the best distinction, but it
may be on ly a v a r ie ty o f the n ext species.
