Dioicous ; in small bright green tufts, with a lurid brownish tint
when old and d r y ; stems simple or branched. L e a v e s patulous when
moist, straight and subimbricated when dry, lower broadly ovato-lanc.,
upper oblongo-lanc., shortly acuminate, sometimes muticous, v ery co n ca
ve, nearly smooth, margin reflexed but flat below th e point, nerve
rufescent, stout, vanishing at or below apex ; areolation very distinct,
minutely hexagono-rectangular, a little laxer at base. Perich. b ra cts
erect, oblongo-elongate, subvaginant, rather la xe r ; caps, oval, oblong or
subcylindric, equal or a little curved, ferruginous, leptodermous, annulus

This moss varies much in size and density, sometimes reaching a height
of 2 inches ; the teeth of peristome will always distinguish it from B . brevifolia
and vigidtila, but the older synonyms of all three species are sadly confused.
