name on Pol. daidroides B r i d . and squamosum P I o o k . W i l s . both unknown to
Ehrhart.
The genus includes some 25 species, the majority of which are natives
of South America, and closely approximate in habit. One other species
(C. tendía R ö h l .) is European, and has been several times recorded as
British, but I have not seen any genuine native specimens.
C. undulata, although so common, is a most elegant moss, and is certain
to be among those that first attract the notice of a young collector.

habit, but smaller and more slender, and o f a more obscure or reddish
tin t. Stems about i in. high, simple e re c t. L e a v e s crowded, linear-
lan ceolate, shorter and firmer than in C. undulata, less undulated,
e recto-patent, more crisp when dry, less spinulose at b ack, more
densely and minutely a reolate ; the apex somewhat obtuse, the margin
reflexed below, v ery nar rowly bordered, and serrate only in the upper
part ; lamellae 5— 7, much higher, and oc cu p yin g most o f the apex of
leaf, in section each o f 4— 6 small rounded cells. Capsule on a
purple seta, erect or a little inclined, stra ight or subarcuate, narrowly
cylindric, purple r e d ; ca lyp tra v ery narrow, spinulose at p o in t ; lid
dark purple, glossy, with a shorter beak ; teeth o f peristome narrower.
Male plants in separate tufts ; infl. cup-shaped, inner b ra c ts broadly
obovate with the nerve thickened a t apex.

Readily known from C. undulata by its slender habit, olive-green tint,
and shorter, blunt-pointed leaves, which are more minutely areolate. Much
more frequent in America than in Europe.
