Very variable in size and colour according to the locality, but distinguished
from the last species by its obtuse leaves, shorter nerve and more highly
developed peristome. Dickson’s Bryum hrevifolium is certainly identical with
the typical form of the plant.

rather lax, qu ickly squarroso-recurved when wet, erecto-patent and
tw isting when dry, from a broad base narrowly lan ceolate, a cuminate,
ca rinate, th e m argin revolute in the lower half, and longitudinally p lica te
near the base, nerve strong, rufescent, rea chin g apex or slightly
excurrent ; c e lls minute, yellowish, a very few rectangular at base,
papillose rounded and incra ssa te a b o v e ; perich. bra cts longer, semivaginant
to th e middle, thence nar rowly lan ceolate and patent. Caps,
erect, on a flexuose purple pedicel, narrowly ovate-oblong or cylindraceous,
very slightly curved, leptodermous, glossy brown ; ca lyp tra
subulate, prolonged below the lid, annulus indistinct ; lid purple, subula
te, nearly as long as caps., peristome bright red, long, fragile, on a
very narrow basal membrane, many times twisted ; spores minute,
smooth.
Male plant more branched, infl. terminal, b ra c ts from a broad
concave base, narrowly lanc., very faintly nerved.

This common moss varies from i to 2 inches in height, and is always of
a brown or rusty tint ; a tuft of it in fruit has a very pretty appearance from
the neat capsules with long acutely pointed lids.

Dioicous ; lea ves rufescent, ovato-lanceolate, incumbent when dry,
strongly recurved when wet, a cute ly carinate, margin reflexed below,
