This moss varies considerably in the form and size of the capsule and
length of the lid, but in all the specimens that have come before us we have
seen no transition to the next species. In habit it much resemblts Anisothe-
citim squarrosum which may always be distinguished by its smooth leaves and
lax areolation. According to Lindberg the genus Tridontimn belongs to
Tortulacete, standing near Scopelophila M it t . [Merceya S chimp.)
Var. fl. fagimontanum [Brid.)
Plants shorter more dense with shorter branches ; leaves shorter, more
obtuse, scarcely recurved ; capsule smaller.

Variable in density and height, sometimes only reaching half an inch,
but readily distinguished by its short obtuse leaves.
