T h e peristome in this moss is v e r y thin and fra g ile and is thus p rob ab ly
destroyed b y adhesion to the lid, for its p resenc e is e x trem e ly rare. T h e
dull paper-like ca lyp tra s are the first o b jects to dire c t attention to this
species, w h ich is more or less g en e ra lly distr ibuted, but ne ve r o ccurs in grea t
quantity.

innovations. L e a v e s soft, e recto-paten t, when dry com p lica te and
circinato-incurved, broadly ob long-ligulate, ca rinate -conca v e, subundula
te at margin and revolute a t middle, strongly verruculose ; nerve
strong, pa le y e llow , excurrent in a soft mucro or vanishing below the
pa le apiculus, ce lls above coa rse, rounded, at base lax, pellucid, rufous,
s ca rce ly limbate. Inner perich. b ra c ts thin, broadly ovate, nerved, about
as long as the oblong vaginula with its tubular ochrea. C a lyp tra pale
straw-coloured, prolonged below th e cap s., the base contracted and
encircled by short cuneate laciniæ, connivent when dry, pa tent when
moist, the apex smooth or sligh tly papillose. Cap s, on a y e llow or red
seta, oblongo-cylindraceous, at first y e llow , finally rufo-fuscous, smooth,
when dry sligh tly co n tra c ted below mouth, annulus indistinct, lid
conico-subulate, shorter than cap s., peristome arising below orifice,
small, o f i 5 n ar row ly lan ceolate red pun ctate teeth, sometimes irregular,
when dry h or izon tally closing th e capsule, patent when moist ; spores
large, smooth. Male infl. gemmiform, in the axils o f the comal leaves,
b ra c ts thin, ovate, apiculate.
