some di s tance in the rear, near an Arabi an mosque, since cons
e c r a t ed as the he rmi t a g e of St . Seba s t i an. He -was sur rounded by
his coui'tiers, with their s tately ret inues gl i t tering in g o r g e ous
panoply, and proudly tlisplaying the aniiorial bear ings of their

" As the column, under the g r and cardinal, advanc ed u p the
hill of the Ma r tyr s , he was me t by the Moor i sh prince, Abi i 'Alidillah,
a t t ended by fifty cavaliers, who, de s c ending the hill, rode up
to the position occupied by Fe rdinand on the banks of the Xeni l .
As the Moor approa ched the Spani sh king, he would have thrown
himsel f f rom his horse, and s a luted his hand in token of h oma g e ;
hut Fe rdinand hastily pr event ed him, embr a c ing him with every
mai-k of sympa thy and r e g a rd. Abu 'Abdi l lah then del ivered up
the keys of the Alhambr a to his conqucror, saying, ' T h e y are thine,

and moderat ion. '
Af t e r spending a few days in Gr anada , Fe rdinand returned to
his Ciistilian dominions, having previous ly int rus ted the cus tody of
the Alhambr a to Do n Iñigo L o p e z de Mendoz a , Count of Tendi l l a ,
one of his mo s t e xpe r i enc ed captains . T h e f a c t is r e corded in a
Go thi c inscription, former ly pl a c ed over a cistern, d u g at the comma
n d of tha t governor , but no^v on a wall, at the ent rance of the
for t res s , j u s t within the " Ga t e of Jus t i c e . " As none of the

Abou Abda l l a l i livra iilors à son vainqueur les clefs de 1'Alhambr a ,

l 'ordonne ainsi ; use dc ta victoire avec clémence et modérat ion. ' " *
Ap r è s avoir pa s s é que lque s jour s à Grenade, Fe rdinand retourna
dans ses domaines de Castille, laissant la g a rde de 1' Alhambr a à Don
Iñigo L o p e z de Mendoz a , Comt e de Tendi l la, un de ses capitaines
les plus expé r iment é s . L e fait e s t ment ionné dans une inscription
Gothique , pl a c é e j adi s au de s sus d ' u n e citerne, creusée pa r l 'ordre
de ce gouverneur , ma i s qui se t rouve maintenant sur un mur , à
r ent ré e de la for teres se, pr è s la " Po r t e de Jus t i c e . " Comme aucun

of the Spanisli cbronielers. Much useful and interesJng information may likewise be derived from
the account of a French ndvonlurer, who was present at tlie siege, which was printed nt Paris in the same
