MOSAIC DADO IN THE CENTRE WINDOW ON THE NORTH
SIDE OF THE HALL OF THE AMBASSADORS.
The recess or tUvan containing these beautiful Mosaics, was,
doubtless, the throne of the Moorish Kings, as appears to be indicated
both by the inscriptions on the walls, and by the care evideivtly
bestowed upon all its ornaments.
Thèse Mosaics ai-e as perfect as when originally executed, and
seem, indeed, to be imperishable. They are formed of baked clay,
squeezed into moulds of the different figures, glazed on the surface,
and bevelled slightly on the edge ; thus, they were not only easily
witluh-awn from the moulds, but when united, they formed a key
for the mortar which attached them to the walls.

MILIEU) COTE NORD DE LA SALLE DES AMBASSADEURS.
L'alcove ou divan qui contient ces belles Mosaïques, était,
sans doute, le trône des Rois Maures, comme semblent l'indiquer
les inscriptions sur les murs, et le soin visiblement apporté à tous
les ornements.
Ces Mosaïques se trouvent aussi parfaites que lors de leur
exécution première, et paraissent être impérissables. Elles sont en
terre cuite, moulées en différentes formes, vernies à la surface, et
légèrement taillées en biais sur les bords ; ce (|ui non seulement les
rendait plus aisées ii tirer du moule, mais aussi donnait prise au
mortier qui les attachait au mur.
