f S 'O your genius, M y Lord, indefatigable in the fearch o f
A nature’ s fecrets, and which often leads you through
rough and defert paths, rarely; or never trod by the great, and
to that frieiidihip with which yon honourthofe who fpare neither
trouble nor fatigue in clambering over deep and rocky mountains,
to read the ancient pbyfical hidory o f our globe, I owed
my fird excurfion to Dalmatia, as well as the earned dedre o f
returning thither. Afterwards, when it became neceffary that I
mud abandon that intention, by embracing yonr generous propo-
fals to pafs to the obfervation o f greater objeifs, in more remote,
and hitherto unknown lands, particular circumdances determined
me to repafs the Adriatic, indead o f navigating the ocean..
Upon this occafion I reviiited that part o f Dalmatia which I
before had the honour o f viewing only curforily in your Lord-
ihip’s company ; and depending on my remaining at lead two
years in that kingdom, I furni'Thed myfelf with preliminary informations,
and advanced further into the country than the ne-
ceflity o f your affairs permitted you to go. But the plan o f this
