S yn. Orobanche elatior. Sutton Tr. of Linn. Soc. v- 4 .
178. t. 17.
T h E Rev. Mr. Sutton, of Norwich, fir ft obferved and well
afcertained this fpecies, and he has favoured us with the ufe
of the original drawing, made under his infpeCtion, in order to
complete our hiftory of the genus as far as it is known in
England.
The O. elatior has hitherto been confounded With the major,
t. 421, for it occurs full as frequently as that in fields, thickets,
and hilly bufhy places on a gravelly foil, flowering in July
and Auguft.
It differs fromO. major, in being taller, more yellowifh, and
with a much longer and more numerous fpike of flowers ; Mr.
Sutton having fometimes counted above 100. The root generally
adheres to that of Trifolium pratenfe, or Centaurea Sca-
biofa. The leaves of the calyx are united at the bafe before.
The corolla is lefs inflated; its border is much curled and
fringed; its upper lip fometimes a little cloven. The ftamina,
fo ufeful in characterizing the fpecies of Orobanche, are in-
ferted into the tube above its bafe, and are downy on the in-
fide from the bottom upwards for half their length, being
fmooth in the upper part, not elothed with glandular rough-
nefs as in O. major. The germen and ftyle, which in that are
downy, in this are fmooth. Stigma inverfely heartfhaped,
yellow.—The O. minor, t. 423, has a purple ftigma, the ftamina'ciliated,
not clothed with hairs, the middle fegmentof
the lower lip lobed and undulated, the calyx of two feparate -
leaves, and the whole plant is a great deal fmaller.
