J. HIS is of ftill more frequent occurrence than the laft in
meadows, paftures, by way-fides, and limilar places, flowering
in June, July and Auguft.
Root fibrous, perennial. Stems long, filiform, trailing, and
taking root from the joints, as in P . a n f e r i n a . Leaves in
pairs from each joint, on long ereft ftalks; compofed of 5
(often more) obovate ferrated leaflets, of a dark green, a little
hairy. Stalks folitary, erect, riling above the leaves, and each
bearing a large yellow flower. Calyx of 10 entire fegments,
of which the intermediate ones are of a deeper green than the
reft. Petals obcordate, broad and fliort.
We prefume the plant in Ray’s S y n o p f i s , inferted by Dillenius
P ' ^ 3 3 ' n ' 4j mult be a variety of this, as Mr. Hudfon fuppofes;
but we cannot help totally diflenting from that gentleman in
referring T o r m e n t i l l a r e p t a n s to the fame fpecies, as the flighted
infpeaion will prove it totally diftinft, though occafionally
bearing fome five-cleft flowers.
